Since the rule of the Gelgel dynasty in the 15th century, it has been revered as a central and sacred temple of immense importance for the entire island of Bali. It has been regarded as the primary center of Hinduism in Bali.

Besakih Temple, or Pura Penataran Agung, is the principal place of worship in Bali. This temple complex comprises twenty-two temples arranged along parallel ridges. It symbolizes the core belief of the Balinese people, known as “Tri Hita Kirana.” This belief emphasizes the necessity of maintaining a delicate balance and harmony in all aspects of life on Earth, encompassing the relationships between man and God, man and society, man and his fellow human beings, and man and the natural environment.

Kerta Gosa Ancient Justice Court Palace

The Kerta Gosa Ancient Justice Court Palace is a remarkable ancient edifice showcasing traditional Balinese architectural design. It comprises two distinct structures, known as the Kerta Gosa Bale and the Bale Kambang. The term “Bale Kambang” is derived from the presence of a surrounding pond, creating a picturesque water garden setting.

What sets Kerta Gosa apart, especially in the Bale Kambang, is the elaborate ceiling adorned with traditional paintings crafted in the style of Kamasan, a village in Klungkung, or in the style of puppetry, a beloved art form in Balinese culture. Initially, these ceiling paintings were fashioned using cloth and parba materials. However, since 1930, a restoration project replaced these materials with plasterboard, meticulously recreated to preserve the original imagery, which remains intact to this day.
